Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing ReportBy Capt. Jim BrincefieldAnother beautiful day on The Bay today hey, we’re on a roll! For our 76th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed Mr. Bravitt C. Manley, Jr. and his two sons Matthew and Justin from Centreville, VA for a total of 3 anglers. There’s something absolutely wonderful about taking your kids out fishing on The Bay it’s magic! We started by bottom fishing at Holland Point and at Poplar Island. We used standard bottom rigs baited with Bloodworms, Squid, Peeler Crab, Bait Shrimp, and Razor Clams. We did fairly well with the bottom fishing. We made 3 successful long drifts and caught 7 medium and jumbo Norfolk Spot, 6 nice White Perch, and 14 gargantuan Atlantic Croakers (“Hardhead”) up to our largest of the year a 19.75/3.75 lb. Croakersaurus! On our 4th and 5th drifts, we didn’t catch anything so we decided to go and try some light tackle chumming for some Striped Bass (“Rockfish”) at “The Gooses”. So, we slinked on down The Bay and used cut Bunker and Razor Clams for hook bait in the chum slick. It was a good bite and a decent grade of fish. We caught 6 corpulent Rockfish from 18” 24” (our limit) plus our boat fish at this location. We also released several undersized Rockfish. Zach Stauffer (standing in rear, in group shot) served as 1st Mate.

Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report (A.M. Trip)By Capt. Jim BrincefieldIt was another beautiful day on The Bay today but the fishing slowed down a bit. For our 73rd Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing
Season we welcomed Dana & David Ayers, friends, and family for a bottom fishing extravaganza for a total of 28 anglers. Several of the kids brought “Grandpa” along and he had not seen the Bay for many years. “Grandpa” and I reminisced about the old days and pondered whether these kids will live to see the demise of The Bay. Capt. Karl Bieberich (standing on far left, in rear) served as 1st Mate.

It was another great day on The Bay today (and still quite warm). The fishing was good, but slowed down a bit. For our 72nd Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed George Fuller, coworkers, and friends for a total of 12 anglers for an afternoon/evening combo trip. We slithered on down to “The Gooses” to do some light spinning tackle chumming. It was an excellent bite. We caught 24 obese Striped Bass (“Rockfish”) from 18” 24” (our limit) plus our boat fish at this location. Overall, it was an excellent grade of Rockfish again today. We also released a few undersized Rockfish. Then we went bottom fishing at The Stone Rock in the mouth of the Choptank River. It was a fair bite. We caught a 5 gallon bucket full of medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot and Atlantic Croaker (“Hardhead”). We used standard bottom rigs with Razor Clams, Squid, and Bloodworms for hook bait. Capt. I must admit, “Big Fish” did put a whoopin’ on ‘em until mysteriously, his hook “went dull” - ??? Then we went bottom fishing at The Stone Rock in the mouth of the Choptank River. It was a good bite there, as well. We caught 1 gargantuan Atlantic Croaker (“Hardhead”) and an orange mesh bushel basket full of medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot. Conspicuous in his absence was the Patriarch of this crew and one of our “Legends of the Bay” Jim “Lead Rod” (pronounced leed) Boland, Sr. As the crew offered various and numerous criticisms regarding his absence, the Captain defended his honor for this “excused” absence. We slinked on down to “The Gooses” to do some light spinning tackle chumming. It was a good bite. We caught 14 corpulent Striped Bass from 18” 27” (our limit) plus our boat fish at this location. Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report (P.M. Trip)By Capt. Jim Brincefield
We had the morning off this morning because we went to Capt. Frank Carver’s wedding at 3:00 p.m. We took the kids and some friends fishing this morning under perfect weather conditions. After Capt. Frank’s wedding we took an afternoon party out with impending skies, dark clouds, and approaching storms…oh , no not this Spring, you must be thinking of another… So, for our 66th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed the men of VACCA Northern Virginia Chapter for a total of 12 anglers. We slithered on over to “Suicide Hill” to do some light spinning tackle chumming. It was a disaster. Between a completely non-existent bite and the violent storms, coupled with howling winds, crashing lightning and thunder, and torrential rains - it just could not get any worse. We tried to “save the day” with some bottom fishing at Poplar Island. That too, was miserable. We managed to only scrape together 12 Atlantic Croakers (“Hardhead”), 6 nice White Perch, and 10 medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot. We used standard bottom rigs with Razor Clams, Squid, and Bloodworms for hook bait. We ended up coming back to the wharf early to get out of the storms and rain. A big “Jil Carrie” Thank You to all of the intrepid anglers who really hung in there despite the slow bite and horrible weather. Zach Stauffer (not pictured) served as 1st Mate.

Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report (A.M. Trip)By Capt. Jim BrincefieldWe had the morning off this morning because we are scheduled to go to Capt. Frank Carver’s wedding at 3:00 p.m. So, we figured for our 65th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we would take the kids out front fishing. We took Little Jimmy and Sarah and a couple who are friends of ours from the neighborhood Frank & Cathleen DuBois and their two kids Camille & Barron for a total of 7 anglers. We putt putted out front to make a couple of drifts on Holland Point Bar. We caught 3 humungous Atlantic Croakers, 6 huge White Perch, and 8 medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot. We used standard bottom rigs with Razor Clams and Bloodworms for hook bait.
Our son, James C. Brincefield IV - "Little Jimmy", who is 5 years old, caught his first Maryland Department of Natural Resources Citation and Embroidered Patch fish of his young life - a 12.75" whopper of a White Perch while bottom fishing at Holland Point, Deale, MD on 6/21/03. Little Jimmy was fishing with his sister Sarah Elizabeth, his Mom Jil, and Daddy - Capt. Jim Brincefield aboard the "Jil Carrie". This beauty of a White Perch struck a bloodworm fished from a standard bottom rig. "That's my boy"!
Here’s Little Jimmy and his 6 year old friend/young angler Barron Dubois of Deale, MD with a pair of nice MDDNR Citation Hardheads! No, not Jil and Frank!

Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing Report (P.M. Trip)By Capt. Jim BrincefieldFor our 64th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed the gang from Tidalfish.com BS Board for a total of 18 anglers for an evening bottom fishing trip to raise money for our favorite charity - The Ele Fund. More rains, more winds, more rough weather, more fronts coming through - somebody just shoot me. We slinked on down to "The Gooses" to do some bottom fishing. We used standard bottom rigs with Razor Clams, Bloodworms, Squid, Peeler Crabs, Bait Shrimp, and cut Bunker for hook bait. Fritzer used jigs and jigged a few undersized Rockfish (released) and a few Norfolk Spot. We struggled through a very slow bite to catch 6 Atlantic Croakers, 25 medium and jumbo Norfolk Spot, and 4 undersized Striped Bass ("Rockfish") (released). We quit early as what slow bite we had going, completely shut down shortly after 9:00 p.m. The slow bite only added fuel to the adult beverages fire though, as many aboard made up for lost time! Upon our return to the wharf, we invaded the Happy Harbor and enjoyed good company and cold, frosty, malted adult beverages until closing time. We will do another CroakerFest on Friday, August 1, 2003 to make up for this one. Zach Stauffer (seated on rail, on far right, in rear) served as 1st Mate today.

For our 62nd Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed the Knights of Columbus Council led by our good friend Jim “Lead Rod” (pronounced “leed”) Boland, Sr. for a total of 11 anglers for a morning (6:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m.) light tackle bottom fishing and chumming trip. Surprise, surprise, another cloudy, overcast, rainy damp, and dismal day. Somebody turn this stuff off! We tried something a bit different today as we stopped out front at Holland Point Bar to collect some White Perch and Spot to try some live lining at The Hill to see if we could scare up some larger Rockfish. We made several drifts and caught 10 medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot, 12 nice White Perch and 4 enormous Atlantic Croakers (“Hardhead”). We used standard Bottom Rigs and baited up with Cut Spot, Razor Clams, Bloodworms, Squid, Bait Shrimp, and Peeler Crab for hook bait. Then, we slinked on over to “Suicide Hill” to do some light spinning tackle chumming and live lining. The live lining did not work at all. We used standard chumming rigs with Razor Clams and cut Bunker for hook bait on the chumming rigs. We caught 18 portly Striped Bass (“Rockfish”) from 18” - 23” at this location. We also released quite a few undersized Rockfish. Capt. Al “The Livin’ Legend” Jones (seated on rail, on far right, in rear) served as 1st Mate today.

Middle Chesapeake Bay Fishing ReportBy Capt. Jim BrincefieldFor our 60th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we held our 1st Annual Chesapeake Bay Scientists Trip for a total of 12 anglers for an 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. day party. Our Guest of Honor for our Inaugural Trip was renowned National Science Foundation and NOAA environmental and marine biologist Mr. Edward O. Murdy. Mr. Murdy is the author of the “Bible” on Chesapeake Bay Fishes entitled “Fishes of the Chesapeake Bay”, published by the Smithsonian Press. This fishing trip is designed to be a “Thank You” to some of the people that help us to better understand and manage our Chesapeake Bay fisheries. It is also an opportunity for us to get together and exchange ideas while enjoying a day on the Chesapeake Bay. Also, I was especially happy to have Jil and her friend Sue Wilkins along to help us welcome our guests. It was a decent day on The Bay with fair seas and calm winds (for a change) and the fish were a snappin’… Covering this event for the press was Lauren Silver of The Bay Weekly Newspaper. The best part about her attendance was that Ms. Silver caught her 1st Fish today (amongst others) - a 19” keeper Rockfish! We slithered on over to “Suicide Hill” to do some light spinning tackle chumming. We used standard chumming rigs with Razor Clams and cut Bunker for hook bait. It was an excellent bite with a superb grade of fish. We caught 24 obese Striped Bass (“Rockfish”) from 18” 31.5” (our limit) plus our boat fish at this location. We also released several undersized Rockfish. Jil had the big fish of the day a 27.5” beauty, but Angel Bolinger from the MDDNR Fisheries Service took the day near the end with a 31.5” Whopper! Then we went bottom fishing at Poplar Island. We made several drifts and caught 80 medium and Jumbo Norfolk Spot, 6 nice White Perch and 2 Atlantic Croakers (“Hardhead”). Then we tried a few drifts at Buoy 84 for Flounder with no takers. We used standard Bottom Rigs and baited up with Cut Spot, Razor Clams, Bloodworms, Squid, Bait Shrimp, and Peeler Crab for hook bait. Capt. Al “The Livin’ Legend” Jones (on far left) served as 1st Mate. Zach Stauffer (seated on rail, on far right) served as 2nd Mate today.

Jim BrincefieldFor our 59th Fishing Trip of the 2003 Fishing Season we welcomed our good friend Mr. Dennis Hankey of PA and friends for a total of 9 anglers on an afternoon/evening combo trip. It was another cloudy, blustery, damp, cold, dreary, windy afternoon and evening on The Bay today (what’s new) complete with choppy seas and a nasty 15 20 knot East wind. As Capt. Al “The Livin’ Legend says… “East is the least”… So, we slithered on over to “Suicide Hill” to do some light spinning tackle chumming. We used standard chumming rigs with Razor Clams and cut Bunker for hook bait. It was a decent bite. We caught 18 obese Striped Bass (“Rockfish”) from 18” 26.75” (our limit) plus our boat fish at this location. We also released several undersized Rockfish. We also caught 1 Snapper Bluefish 19”/2.5 lbs. Then we went bottom fishing at Poplar Island. We made 3 drifts and caught only 1 White Perch. Then we went bottom fishing at the Clay Banks Buoy. We made 4 drifts and caught 2 medium Norfolk Spot and 1 humungous Atlantic Croaker (“Hardhead”). Then we went bottom fishing at “The Gooses” and caught 100 plump Hardheads from 14” 17” and a few more Rockfish (released over limit).
