Remember to vote for the state slogan of your choice!

"More than 60,000 people participated in the vote last month. The question was whether they wanted an official travel sign slogan. Voters were then invited to make their own suggestions.

Coming out as the top three were the 1960s slogan “Wild, Wonderful.” That slogan was developed by a Baltimore, Md., advertising firm during the first administration of former Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. in the late 1960s.

Another that most state residents identify with was “Almost Heaven.” That famed phrase is lifted from the “Country Roads” song made internationally famous by the late singer John Denver.

And many state residents dipped back further into their memories and said they wanted “The Mountain State.” That slogan was on state license plates decades ago.

“They certainly are the top three by far,” Ramsburg said. “And now I think they should all be given an equal chance.”

The winner will be decided during a two-week period beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 15 and concluding at midnight Oct. 29.

Three state-operated Web sites will be available for voting then:

www.wv.gov

www.wvgov.org

and

www.wvtourism.com.

Those without computer access can vote by telephoning (866) SLOGAN-4.

Manchin has said he prefers “Wild, Wonderful.” His wife, first lady Gayle Manchin, likes “Almost Heaven.” Those two pronouncements have been seen by some observers as a giveaway as to which slogans finished in the top two.

When voting is complete, the governor has vowed to take the people’s choice to the Legislature in January and ask that they make the slogan law.

Coming in at No. 4 was “Mountaineers are always free,” the English version of the state motto. Despite that, it didn’t gather enough support to make the Big 3."
