I have never had a problem with stainless steel utensils rusting in the dishwasher and I've lived in town over 10 yrs. My silverware isn't cheapy stuff but not the most costly either. I know we've had trouble with the water so that's a concern. But I'm just curious, are you all who have utensils rusting also having any problems with your stainless steel sinks? (if you have stainless steel sinks) Just curious because it may in fact be the dishwasher detergent instead of the water. They make some really strong soap for the dishwasher these days. Try switching to a less expensive brand. If you don't think it's the soap, I'd call the manufacturer of the utensils and ask about the warranty. Most good quality utensils come with a lifetime (or at least 10 yr.) quarentee. Of course if you're buying your silverware at the dollar store I wouldn't be washing it in the dishwasher. Stainless steel USA quality is a lot different than "made in china" dollar store quality. Even I love a bargain but did you ever notice that like 98% of the stuff in the dollar stores is made in chna? Did you know that some plasticware is dishwasher safe? Probably 'cause it's made in the USA!
