From Leo Servis, Director of EMS:

Dear Spotswood Residents,

It has been brought to my attention that some residents have expressed concern about the recent fund drive on behalf of the Spotswood Volunteer First Aid Squad, Inc. and some confusion as to the status of the organization.

In April 2006, the Spotswood Emergency Medical Services was formed to help supplement the response of the volunteer members. Unfortunately, the ranks of the volunteer system have been diminished, and surrounding towns could not guarantee coverage in the event of an emergency. This created a great burden and considerable concern when answering emergency calls. Thus, paid EMT's were employed to staff an ambulance in town at all times.

In addition to the creation of the paid staff of the Spotswood Emergency Medical Services, the volunteers of Spotswood First Aid Squad, Inc. are still very much an active organization. The volunteers are still utilized to answer emergency calls and stand by at sporting and civic events within the town. The volunteer squad is constantly recruiting members, but it is very hard to retain them when members have to work several jobs to support their families. This leaves very little time for volunteering.

The funds collected via donations are used for several main components within the volunteer squad. Donations are used for such things as insurance, vehicle maintenance, equipment, supplies, uniforms and training. Your donations have always been the lifeline of the survival of the volunteer squad.

Please keep in mind that the paid staff of the Spotswood Emergency Medical Services is a completely different entity than the volunteers of the Spotswood First Aid Squad, Inc. If you should have any questions, I would be glad to address them to help you understand the vital importance of both organizations.
