Recognizing that knowledge of national history is an important part of good citizenship, the Jamesburg Historical Association is sponsoring a history essay contest for 8th grade students attending public or private/parochial schools and who are residents of Jamesburg, Monroe Township or Helmetta. The students are asked to write a 500 word minimum composition entitled: “How Knowing My Country’s History Makes Me a Better Citizen.” Complete contest rules are available on-line at www.jamesburg.net.
The Association will award two $100 US Savings Bonds, one to a public school student and one to a private/parochial student. Entries must be postmarked by May 16th. The two winners will be announced on June 6th. The two winning essays will be published in our newsletter, The Lakeview Record.
The Jamesburg Historical Association was founded in 1979 to preserve Jamesburg area history and Lakeview, the mansion that once belonged to James Buckelew, Jamesburg’s namesake. The mansion was built between 1685 and 1870. It is currently undergoing its first major renovation since 1870. Lakeview serves as the area’s museum. The Association has acquired several thousand artifacts since its founding. Most of them will be displayed once the renovation is completed.
